Natural Recession: Worries As River Niger’s Water Level Drops

Nigeria and the other countries that depend on the River Niger are worried that the body of water may be dropping.

This alarm was raised by the  Acting Auditor of the Federation (AuGF), Mrs Florence Anyanwu. Anyanwu was speaking 6th Annual Meeting of African Organization do Supreme Audit Institutions Working Group on Environmental Audit (AFROSAI WGEA) in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Talks are ongoing on the cooperative environmental audit project on River Niger by Niger Basin Authority consisting of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’ Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria,” Anyanwu said.

River Niger’s water level drops

The aim of the audit is to find out the causes of the reduction in the water level. It will also inform the governments the steps to take to counter them.

Cameroonian minister and chairperson of the AFROSAI WGEA, Mrs Mbah Acha Rose Fomundam, warned that the results of the audit must be implemented to prevent River Niger ending up like Lake Chad.

“Despite the signing of multilateral agreements on the environment and established institutions, current scientific studies reveal that many of the planet’s ecosystems have rapidly deteriorated over the last 20 years,” Fomundam said.

“Citizens have increasingly expected that organizations that hurt the environment be held immediately accountable for their actions.  Many citizens also feel that government declarations concerning the environment and sustainable development should be subject to independent audits to assess the extent to which they are implemented.”
