The Nigerian Senate will on Wednesday, March 1, begin the screening and subsequent confirmation of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN).
This disclosure was made known today by the Senate President Bukola Saraki, who, during plenary, said that the proceedings would take place by 11am.
Saraki said, “Confirmation of Onnoghen, Tomorrow Wednesday 1st of March, 2017 at 11am in plenary. Kindly endeavour to be punctual please.”
Mr. Onnoghen’s name was forwarded to the Senate on February 8 for confirmation as a substantive CJN by acting President Yemi Osinbajo, in a letter.
The letter read, “Following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council(NJC), I hereby notify you of the appointment of Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria(CJN). ”
The Senate President is requested to kindly present the said appointment of the Honourable Justice Onnoghen for confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, pursuant to section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. ”
Please accept, Mr. Senate President, the assurances of my highest regards.”
Birthed in Kruiku Town, Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, Onnoghen has been leading the country’s judiciary in acting capacity since November 10 when he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed.
