Senate Confirms Walter Onnoghen As Chief Justice Of Nigeria

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Onnoghen’s confirmation came after a screening exercise conducted for the Cross River-born judge lawmakers during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

During today’s screening process, Federal Lawmakers questioned him on issues of the independence of the judiciary, judicial reforms, corruption in the Judiciary as well as disobedience of Court orders.

The justice maintained that the independence of the judiciary would continue under his watch. He however warned that Nigeria would be in serious trouble the moment the judiciary is politicised.

Senate To Begin Onnoghen’s Confirmation Hearing As Chief Justice Of Nigeria On Wednesday

President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, while congratulating the new CJN on his appointment, lauded his colleagues who fileded questions.

 “We are enlightened by some of the views presented today,” said Saraki.

Mr. Onnoghen’s name was forwarded to the Senate on February 8 for confirmation as a substantive CJN by acting President Yemi Osinbajo, having been so recommended by the National Judicial Council.

He had been leading the country’s judiciary in acting capacity since November 10 when he was so appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed.

The delay in nominating him to the Senate for confirmation had generated controversy, with lawmakers from his home state accusing the President of sectionalism.

Mr. Onnoghen, 67, was born in Kruiku Town, Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.
