The Taraba State Police Command on Friday confirmed the arrest of eight persons in connection with the killings in Sardauna Local Government Area of the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr  Yunana Babas, also told newsmen in Jalingo that 18 persons had been confirmed dead while several villages were destroyed.

While the commissioner added that the terrain had made access to the area difficult to determine the exact level of damage, Daily Trust quoted locals in the area as saying that more bodies were being recovered after the attack.

It was gathered that soldiers visited Mayo Ndaga and Dorofi Gbamga, in the early hours of Friday, where a number of corpses were recovered.

Those trapped and the injured were brought to Gembu, headquarters of the local government area, and are being given medical attention while camps have been set up for displaced persons.

It is understood that the attacks came simultaneously and continued for days with Militiamen believed to be from Mambilla invading several villages and settlements across the Mambilla plateau, killing many people and set houses ablaze.

It started in the evening of Saturday, June 17 when the militia attempted to invade Ngouroge town but were timely blocked by soldiers from the 20 Battalion, Serti.

However, it was gathered that they moved towards Gembu, headquarters of the local government and attacked a settlement near Likitaba village and killed some people including their cows.
