Fabio Borini is undergoing a medical at AC Milan ahead of his proposed move from Sunderland.

The deal to take Fabio Borini to AC Milan is a loan with an a condition to buy.

Once made permanent, the transfer will total £5.3m for Sunderland.

Borini had been expected to join Lazio but, with the Rome club balking at meeting his £35,000-a-week wages, Milan stepped in and appear to have hijacked the transfer of a striker who has previously played for Chelsea, Roma and Liverpool but rarely looked like fulfilling his potential.

Borini, who has scored a modest 16 league goals in the past five years, frequently disappointed at Sunderland but argued he was too often asked to play out of position on the wings and instructed to do more tracking back than attacking.

Fabio Borini would become Milan’s fifth signing of the summer, following Mateo Musacchio, Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez and Andre Silva in joining theRossoneri.

A successful conclusion to the negotiations would see Borini leave the Stadium of Light two years after his £10m switch from Liverpool on a four-year deal.

Most of Sunderland’s players have a relegation clause in their contracts which triggers a 40 percent reduction in wages, and the club’s fall into the Championship at the end of last season means those clauses have now been activated.
