Music groups are not a new feature in the music ecosystem, they serve as great alternatives to the endless string of solo artistes. During concerts, performances from music groups come in handy as the much-needed variety to further excite an already stimulated audience.

Nigeria has had its own share of renowned music groups who have totally rocked the airwaves and concert stages. Some Nigerians would remember groups like Trybesmen, KC Presh, Plantashun Boys, Styl-Plus etc. Before most of them broke up and some members went solo, these groups registered memorable hit records in our music archives. Sometimes we cherish the memories they stirred within us, so often we wish they would reunite for one more hit song. In most cases, this never happens.

The fact that most prominent music groups often break up, doesn’t mean that such unions should never happen again. We all love Psquare, we all love to watch their exhilarating performance.

If anyone pays close attention to the happening in the Nigerian music industry you would notice newer groups springing up. Like the popular Psquare, the most important bond shared among the members is the blood ties, they are brothers. Same thing goes for these notable groups Boybreed, Hypa and DNA etc.

DNA and Hypa seem to enjoy a bit of spotlight and could be tagged as the “next big” in terms of music groups.

Between Hypa and DNA, which group would give Nigerians that kind of feeling we derived from listening to Styl-Plus or Peter and Paul Okoye?

In case you don’t know, Hypa is a buzzing music duo of two brothers, whose stage names are HypaRay and HypaJay. The boys share a few similarities with the Okoye twins, Ray leans towards the persona of garrulous and hyperactive Peter Okoye while Jay sports dreadlocks like Paul with a calmer disposition.

The brothers are currently signed under one of Nigeria’s frontline record labels Dreams Records. They group began doing music at a professional level last November when they were able to secure a recording contract with their current label. So far Ray and Jay have come a long way by releasing trending singles “Alert” which has an accompanying video and the most recent “Asiko” within their six months of entrance into the Nigerian music landscape.

Despite being regarded as newcomers, the duo has been able to weave cordial relationships with older colleagues in the industry, like Reminisce, Patoranking, Aramide etc. Interestingly, Hypa has earned features on the pages of Nigerian newspapers like the Guardian, Tribune and Encomium.

Meanwhile, DNA is Mavin Records only signed music group made up of Clinton and Blair. So far they have a highlife-influenced track “How Can” which was produced by label head Don Jazzy. “How Can” is a song which was produced for the purpose of being played at traditional marriages, weddings and general “owambe”.

The Mavin Record music acts first struck stardom by appearing on the set of different music reality shows, Glo X Factor and Airtel The Voice Nigeria, but were edged out eventually before the finals.

Both groups seem to be on the path to becoming household names. However, one of the groups is showing more zest in edging out Boybreed and subsequently wresting power from the masters Psquare.

A close scrutiny of Hypa showed that the duo is currently laying the very formidable framework to sustain the buzz they are making. They are currently undergoing intense media tour across radio stations and television networks across the country.

In a matter of time, most Nigerians would be waking and asking the question who is Hypa?
