Today Catalunya referendum voters were involved in a violent spat with Spain police, prompting an emotional Pique to say he could resign from the Spain squad.
Footage was released today of Spanish national police striking out at protesters in Catalan, with majority of the violence occurring in Barcelona, the capital of Catalan.
Almost 400 people who supported the referendum have been reported injured , prompting the match between Barcelona and Las Palmas to be played behind closed doors.
And Pique, who was close to tears and voted before the 3-0 win over Las Palmas has challenged the pro-catalan critics in the RFEF and La Roja squad.
“If the coach or any director of the Federation thinks that I am a problem for the national, I will step aside before the World Cup,” the defender, visibly moved by the day’s events, told reporters at the final whistle.
“It has been a very hard game to play, the worst experience of my professional career.
“I am and I feel like a Catalan and today I am proud of the people of Catalunya.
“We are not a minority, there were millions of us. We are not the bad guys, we just want to vote.”
