If you’re like most people of the world, a typical morning routine will include a shower, brushing and flossing, and wrapping up by applying a swipe or spray of deodorant. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that as much as 95 percent of Americans and European women regularly use deodorant, which has made the deodorant business a billion dollars industry.
A sizable number of us probably can’t imagine stepping out the door without putting on deodorant but new evidences seem to point to the fact that deodorants and antiperspirants are unnecessary and they may even be dangerous to your health.
While giving up deodorant or antiperspirant may sound ludicrous, consider the new things scientists are discovering about its use and be the judge.
You Might Not Need Deodorant
Quite a number of us actually need deodorants to feel and smell clean as a result of the standards of the modern world. The truth is no one wants to smell bad even when you are all alone by yourself.
Very many of us cannot stand being by ourselves after going for a run or visiting the gym until we get a shower and wear some deodorant, as that’s the time you get back to feeling like your normal self.
The truth however is that not everyone needs it. The reason why you smell is because the bacteria living in your armpits breaks down lipids and amino acids found in your sweat and turns them into substances that have a very distinct odour.
Everyone can relate to what that smell is, right? However, a recent study found out that not everyone produced the bacteria that leads to underarm odour. The study also discovered that the majority of those who do not tend to have smelly armpits still use deodorant and/or antiperspirant.
Certain People Are More Prone To Odour
About a decade ago, some research scientists at the University of Bristol discovered that a gene called ABCC11 determined whether people produced wet or dry earwax. The interest in thing the researchers discovered that people who produce the “dry” version of earwax also lack a chemical in their armpits that leads to underarm odour.
The scientist concluded through a study that was published in the journal LiveScience that the key gene is basically the single determinant of whether a person gets to produce underarm odour or not.
The researchers also discovered that about 2 percent of Europeans lack the genes for smelly armpits, while most East Asians and almost all Koreans lack this gene. What this means is that quite a significant percentage of people are spending their money and exposing their skin to what may in a few instances not be good for their skin.
What this suggests is the fact that there are a lot of conformists in today’s world. While we do not suggest that you go around testing your earwax on your own to determine if you have that smelly gene, the simple fact is that it is an interesting connection.
