The fact that we all must face is that cars that come off the assembly line aren’t what they used to be. Gone are the days when the common man could afford a brand new car and get all the horsepower he needs from it.

However, the fact that the glory days of a lot of cars are over doesn’t mean you can’t have a serious performance vehicle. In fact, tuning up your wheels is easier than ever, courtesy of the modern plug-and-play design.

If you want to get more horsepower and improved performance from your cars, here are six improvements you can tell your mechanic to make to your cars.

Air Intake Valve
The installation time is about 30 minutes and your mechanic simply needs a Socket set, screwdriver amd pliers. Changing the air intake valve can add between 5 to 10 horsepower to your car and depending on your type of car, can cost as much as 40,000 Naira.

Swapping the air intake valve isn’t always an option. It however is one of the easiest and fastest changes you can make to your car for a little extra speed. Cars are basically big air pumps, the more air you can get through it, the more horsepower you’re going to get. It will also make your car louder and get you more attention when you are in the drivers seat.

Performance Chip and Tuner

Changing this can add between 25 to 30 horsepower and the installation takes about 15 minutes. It costs between 200 to 300 thousand naira.

You may be surprised to discover that you can change out the chip on your car easier than doing just about anything else, especially if you make use of a diagnostic tuner. In a lot of cases it’s just plug and play.

However, you maybe telling your car to sacrifice fuel efficiency for performance but if the latter is your goal, you are good.

Exhaust

Changing your exhaust can gain you between 10 to 15 horsepower or more in some cases and can cost as low as 25,000 Naira, depending on your car model.

The more air you can move through your engine without starting a fire, the better your car is going to run. A lot of modern japanese cars are made with fuel efficiency and little or no noise in mind. But when it comes down to it, most people still think loud engines are cool, even if they say they don’t.

Supercharger
Changing this can gain cars as much as 150 horsepower or more and it is quite expensive, with the lowest starting price of 550,000 Naira. Your mechanic will spend a lot of time installing it, as it can take anything between seven to twelve hours. You may want to be patient till he is done.

Brakes
The essence of changing your brakes is to match the horsepower your engine provides to aid your stopping. You need to make sure your brakes work really well when you add a lot of horsepower.

This isn’t easy, but changing the brakes isn’t as hard as it used to be. You should however note that your upgraded car needs upgraded brakes.

Camshaft

The camshaft adds between 25 to 50 horsepower and costs about 40,000 Naira. Camshafts do something that the factory never intended for the car to do. They change how often and for how long the valves are open.

A lot of new cars have some kind of variable valve timing to increase performance. You ahoyld however note that you are going to drastically increase emissions, and that may not be entirely good for the environment.

It is important to note that each upgrade you do to your car will cost you a lot and you still have to have the financial strength to maintain the car afterwards.
So, whether you live life a quarter mile at a time or not, be careful and have some cash on hand.
