Nigerian actor, television presenter and event compere, Bolanle Olukanni, screened her acclaimed documentary of “God’s Wives” in Abuja last week during a meeting for #Concerned Mothers hosted by Her Excellency Dolapo Osinbajo.
The screening hosted a variety of member of the public and dignitaries.
“Gods Wives” is Bolanle Olukanni first documentary and details the challenges that widows face in Nigeria and their struggle after the death of their husbands.
The documentary has been an eye opener bringing to realities the effects of traditional and cultural norms placed on widows.
God’s Wives is an NGO that provides support for widows and single moms through empowerment programs.
The media personality had last year said she was not only inspired to start a foundation called ‘God’s Wives’ but to also draw the attention of Nigerians to the issue through a documentary of the same name.
“The plight of widows in Nigeria is something that I’m really passionate about. I worked with those group of women and over time, I don’t like what is happening to them. Culturally and societally, it is something we need to address.”
“The plight of widows is so unimaginable in this country,” she had said.
Last year the NGO sponsored 75 women to startup businesses in catering, makeup artistry and tailoring. This year they are on track to graduate another group of women in August.
