At least 25 persons have died in a fatal accident that occurred in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, on Friday, July 28, 2017.

The accident occurred after a tanker conveying fuel and an 18-seater bus coming from the North had a head-on coalition, resulting in flames, which consumed both vehicles and its occupants to ashes.

It was learnt that the accident occurred at the Lokoja end of Felele – Okene – Abuja Road at about 1:30pm, with residents of the area scampering for safety.

Also affected in the raging inferno were about 10 cars parked by the road side.

An eyewitness, Bawasa Ibrahim said two tricycle riders popularly called Keke-NAPEP were equally burnt in the accident.

”The tanker and the 18-seater bus were trying to overtake each other. But unfortunately, the tanker lost balance and it fell on the bus.

“We have been complaining to the government to fix this road. Now you can see how many lives that have been lost. No fewer than 25 burnt bodies can be seen here”, he added.

When contacted, Kogi State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Olusegun Martins  who confirmed the accident said the death toll might rise as some of those who sustained injuries were in critical situation.

Men of the state Fire Service Department, who arrived the scene at about 2:20 pm, could not really help due to lack of water in their vehicles.

The accident led to disruption in vehicular movement on the ever-busy Okene -Lokoja -Abuja Road but FRSC officials, police and sympathisers were seen trying to open the road.
