New Watford boss Marco Silva has told the Hertfordshire Mercury that Stephen Berghuis has asked to leave Vicarage Road.

The Dutchman spent last season on loan at Feyenoord and is reportedly keen to rejoin the Eredivisie champions this summer.

After the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in the Graham Taylor Tribute Match, Silva praised the Berghuis’ attitude despite his desire to return to his homeland.

“With Steven it’s an easy decision for me,” Silva explained. “He came back at the start of pre-season and was very good for two weeks: very, very good. He had a good attitude and I was really happy with him.

“He’s a player who came to me and said he didn’t want to stay at the club. He doesn’t want to stay and play for Watford so it’s the moment for the board to decide and sort out a deal for him.
