The suspension slammed on the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof Usman Yusuf, has been extended indefinitely by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole.

In a memo with reference number HMH/ABJ/032/Vol.XII/29 which was dated October 5, 2017, the minister informed Yusuf that his suspension which began in July, would continue until the President acted on the report.

Mr. Yusuf has been on three months suspension since July 6, based on the directive of the health minister to allow for fair and uninterrupted investigation of the various allegations levied against the NHIS boss.

While suspending the NHIS Chief, Adewole had set up a committee to investigate him with respect to the fraud charges leveled against him in a series of petitions.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo who was the acting President at the time had approved the investigation on Yusuf.

The committee set up by the minister, however, found that fraud to the tune of N919m allegedly took place under Yusuf who had spent less than a year in office.

According to Mr. Adewole, the committee found Mr. Yusuf “culpable in many areas” of his performance. The report was then sent to the President on September 4.

 “I am further extending your suspension from office pending the decision of” President Buhari, the minister said.
