Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has the potential to build on his breakthrough and become one of the club’s greatest-ever players, according to former technical director Michael Emenalo.

Michael Emenalo was tasked with overseeing player recruitment, Chelsea’s loan network, and the club’s academy during his tenure in west London, and much of the praise for Christensen’s growth into a first-rate defender should be directed at him.

Since returning from his two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach at the start of this season, Christensen has made 16 appearances in total, and, in the last few weeks, has usurped David Luiz as the first-choice for the central defensive position in Antonio Conte’s three-at-the-back system.

Emenalo refused to be drawn in when asked by Jim White if Christensen is the natural long-term replacement for John Terry, but he did rave about the potential of the 21-year-old Denmark international.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Emenalo said: “The thing I can tell you is Andreas Christensen, with his technical qualities, his personality, his desire, his love for the club… he is a potential great.

“I don’t know how else to put it, but he is a wonderful, wonderful player. We are all thrilled.

“He has shown a lot of intelligence in accepting the pathway provided to him without hesitation – to go to Borussia Monchengladbach – to ensure he is ready to come back and play.

“You don’t hang around in Cobham and keep asking to be given a chance.”
