Having a C-section has somewhat become a thing of choice for a lot of women as most prefer the painless delivery the procedure offers. However, not many women know what to expect, which is why it is important to be as informed as possible regarding the recovery process.

What To Expect A Day After Your C-section
A day after you had a ceaseran section, there is every possibility that you will find it difficult to move. If you were given an epidural for the procedure and it wasn’t removed immediately after, you will have limited activity.

You could feel a lot of pain or very little depending on factors such as your own general health before the surgery, whether or not you were in labour beforehand, and whether or not the C-section was scheduled or an emergency one. Depending on your level of discomfort, you will be given analgesics to help relieve the pain.

Due to the fact that you will be given lots of fluids, you will likely feel puffy. It may take a few days to release these fluids from the body and you should expect to urinate and sweat a lot for the first 48 hours afterwards. You will also be constipated and it will take a few days for that to get resolved.

Furthermore, you should expect some vagina bleeding even if you didn’t experience labour. This is because your body has to expel all of the extra blood and tissue it needed to nourish your baby in the womb. This discharge is known as lochia and you should expect the heaviest bleeding in the first three to five days post-delivery.

…And A Week After
A week after your C-section, you will still have pain and maybe require some painkillers. You won’t be able to do anything strenuous and it is advised you stay off household chores until six to eight weeks later, depending on what your gynaecologist says.

You will likely struggle with your appetite and may also have an irritable vowel due to inflammation from the surgery. You will need to have your staples removed from between 10 to 14 days. Any abdominal dressings, tape, or staples are removed when you visit your doctor to have your incision viewed.

…And A Month After
You might feel numbness around the incision area for a couple of weeks after having a C-section. For the most part, it will go away with time. You may also experience spotting for up to six to eight weeks post-surgery. If you however notice that it seems more than the ordinary, see your doctor immediately.

You should feel almost normal after a month except for the occasional pain or discomfort, though, since your core and abdominal muscles are still healing. You can start up with kegel exercises to help build up your core strength around four to six weeks post-surgery.

On The Long Term
Incontinence issues or peeing in your pants may occur, but the kegel exercises can help rebuild your pelvic floor muscles. Doing it correctly will help support the bladder, rectum, and vagina.

If you do feel emotional, try to find a support group or someone you can talk to. It is a great way to cope.
