Fruits are natural produces that are loaded with nutrients, vitamins, fibers and also contain huge amounts of cancer-fighting antioxidants. All these makes it a healthy snack. However, there are certain things you should be aware of to make sure you’re getting as much as you should from your fruits.
Here are six common mistakes that are most likely stopping you from getting all the healthy benefits the fruits you eat offers.
All Fruits Are Not The Same
For example, if you are considering taking either a cup of pineapple or a bowl of blueberries, you may think both contain the same. Pineapples are a good source of folate and vitamin B6, and blueberries have loads of fiber and vitamin C but both contain very different amounts of carbohydrates, sugar, and fiber.
The best fruits to take are those that have the highest levels of polyphenols (chemicals that fight inflammation) and the lowest glycemic index or how quickly (or slowly) a food will increase your blood glucose levels.
Fruits that are darker in color, like dark-skinned grapes, are richer in antioxidants and contain less sugar per serving than lighter colored fruits, such as bananas and melons.
Drinking Your Fruit As Juice
Whether you’re drinking one that you made or a processed one, your juice doesn’t contain the fibrous parts of the fruit, and fiber is what slows the release of glucose in the bloodstream.
What this means is that you are better off eating a whole piece of fruit or even (occasionally) having a smoothie, because the entire fruit goes into the blender. More so, processed juice often contains preservatives and added sugars which you will want to stay away from.
Making Your Choice Based On How hungry You Are
Whether you are hungry or you just want to satisfy your sweet tooth, it is important to know the one that will provide you with the needed calories. A large apple, for example, has 120 calories, but a small one only has 53.
You should however not compare apples and oranges when making your selection as a large orange and a small apple have about the same number of calories.
Not Buying Organic
While organic fruits may cost more, it is healthier and better when it comes to a number of varieties. Organic apples, grapes and almost every other fruit that may have been exposed to lower quantities of pesticides helps limit your exposure to pesticides, and may provide you with extra nutrients.
Failing To Eat The Skin
The peel if most fruits are often the best part when it comes to vitamins and antioxidants. For example, apple peels are packed with fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A.
Furthermore, research has found that eating the skin may be the key to reducing your risk of obesity and keeping cancer at bay.
Eating Fruits Alone
While a piece of fruit by itself is certainly way better than eating junk food, it also has the potential to make your blood sugar rise and crash it afterwards. Which is why you should pair it with some protein such as a piece of cheese or a dab of nut butter to help eliminate the problem.
The Fruits increase insulin levels, and the protein increases the hormone glucagon. These two hormones work together to stabilize blood sugar levels.
It is especially important to eat some protein with your fruit if you’re diabetic or prediabetic; or else, you may start feeling symptoms of hyperglycemia, such as a rapid heartbeat.
