Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he was close to moving to Barcelona, while he admits he turned down a move to Liverpool in favour of a transfer to Manchester City.
Ilkay Gundogan spent five years at Borussia Dortmund, where he worked under Jurgen Klopp, and was linked with several clubs before he ended up moving to City in 2016.
Discussing the options he had before he moved to the Etihad, he told Sport Arena Plus: “I was very close to signing for Barcelona but in the end it was not so. In any case now I am where I want [to be] and I am very happy.
“[Jurgen] Klopp wanted me. But I decided to go with [Pep] Guardiola, because he had the philosophy closest to my game. Klopp is like a father to me. Guardiola, a genius, a master. He is the best coach in the world.”
