Review: The Falz Experience: The Movie

In December, rapper Falz and his team delivered one of the most memorable concert experiences with his debut solo show, the Falz Experience. Like most concerts with similar leanings, The Falz Experience featured Falz- born Folarin Falana- performing some of his biggest hits to a crowded Eko Hotels audience, alongside heavyweights such as Davido, Yemi Alade, Wande Coal and Simi.

What made The Falz Experience stand out from a crowded December field however was the inspired creative direction and meticulous planning. Oh! Plus judicious time management as well. At its heart, the concert was a scripted film brought to stage by Livespot, a creative company managed by .

This year Falz collaborates with Filmone distribution to bring The Falz Experience to a wider audience in what is being billed as the ‘’first ever music concert movie experience.’’

Truth be told, the movie part of the experience isn’t much to write home about. There are loose skits featuring two of Falz’s alter egos, a by now popular recurrent character named Brother Taju, and Barrister Folarin, a straitlaced lawyer. Joining these wacky characters are Adunni Ade’s gold digging socialite, Constance. The three get up to no good just as soon as they are introduced and Falz is soon hurling himself down from the top of Eko hotel’s Convention center and onto the stage in what has been hailed as the finest and most spectacular entrance in Nigerian concert history.

Falz opened the show with La Fete, the Demsa produced 2017 hit memorable for the delivery of its catchy chorus in a mixture of French and English. He would then go on to try out his freshest hits such as Something Light (with Ycee) and Way (with Wande Coal). He would save the star-baiting Bahd Baddo Baddest- alongside an energetic Davido appearance for last.

Before that however, Falz reached back to his first album and brought out Yemi Alade to do Marry Me,. But it was with the hits from his sophomore record that made all of the difference. Crowd pleaser, Soft Work, an addictive paean on the pleasures of profiting from hard work took on extra significance when he sang the chorus directly to his mother who was present in the hall. Soldier, the song that kicked off the Chemistry era with Simi was well received as well as the elegant Chardonnay Music with Poe and Chin.

The Falz Experience was a tightly scripted, professionally planned recollection of hits from one of the most important entertainers of his generation. The movie attempts to capture lightning in a bottle and it is nice enough that Falz is making the effort to be inclusive. But even on the big screen, the concert does not quite live up to the hype. The movie is great  but for posterity, but it seems nothing quite touches the physical experience.
