Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has received death threats and abuse on social media after he conceded three goals in the Champions League final in Kiev against Real Madrid on Saturday.
The German-born keeper and his family have been the focus of hundreds of threats and hate messages on social media after making several mistakes that resulted in goals for the Spanish club.
Fans are blaming the keeper for Liverpool’s defeat.
The Spanish side’s first goal came when Karim Benzema charged down an attempted throw-out by Karius, and the goalkeeper then allowed a long-range Gareth Bale shot to slip through his grasp for the third.
The 24-year-old German goalkeeper was in tears at the final whistle in Kiev after the 3-1 defeat.
Heartbroken Karius said he was “infinitely sorry” for the mistakes.

He tweeted a heart felt apology on Sunday afternoon saying: “Haven’t really slept until now… the scenes are still running through my head again and again…
“I’m infinitely sorry to my teammates, for you fans, and for all the staff. I know that I messed it up with the two mistakes and let you all down…
“As I said I’d just like to turn back the time but that’s not possible. It’s even worse as we all felt that we could have beaten Real Madrid and we were in the game for a long time…
“Thank you to our unbelievable fans who came to Kiev and held my back, even after the game. I don’t take that for granted and once again it showed me what a big family we are.
Thank you and we will come back stronger.”
While majority of the fans received his apology and also praised him for how he responded to the defeat, other fans, however, took to social media to attack the star.
Other comments wished death on the 24-year-old player’s family.
One poster wrote: “My Liverpool boys fought hard and I’m proud of them. Except for Karius he can die in a hole.”

One said his “sons deserve to die of cancer” and “I hope your whole family dies”.
Meanwhile, Merseyside Police said they were “aware of these messages and making further enquiries”.
