Roberto Mancini is set to become the new Italy manager, according to reports.

The former Manchester City – and current Zenit St Petersburg – boss is said to have met with federation chief Alessandro Costacurta to agree a deal. And, according to numerous reports, the 53-year-old could be set to take the team for the friendly against Saudi Arabia on May 28.

The Italy job has been vacant since Giampiero Ventura was sacked, with Luigi Di Biagio, the Under 21s manager, taking the side for the friendly matches against Argentina and England.

On Monday, Mancini told RAI state radio: “There has not been contact with the [Italian football] federation but, for a coach, the Italian national team would be a source of honour and prestige.”

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and former Leicester coach Claudio Ranieri, who is now in charge of French club Nantes, were among other candidates thought to be in the frame.
