The attempted kidnap of a young boy by a middle-aged man was averted by residents in the Mushin area of Lagos on Wednesday, Sepetember 14.
The suspect, one Charles Ibeleme was caught at Olowo Street by residents who saw him taking his victim to an unknown location. One of the residents, Obioma Chinenye said, “The little boy in question is our tenant. He was sent to buy pure water. On the way, the man called him and he followed him as if he was hypnotized.”
“The person who sent him to buy the water sighted him when the stranger accosted him. He became curious when the boy walked past the shop he was supposed to buy water from. So he ran after him.”
Kidnap foiled by residents in Mushin
“When he asked the stranger what he was doing with the boy, he claimed he was his brother. That was when the boy came back to his senses and said he did not know him. A mob descended on him, which was when he admitted to being a kidnapper. He said he was taking the boy to some people who sent him.”
The man was then thrown into a gully and was about to be set on fire. Policemen from the Olosan Division however arrived on time to prevent this.
The incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Police Command. Spokesman Dolapo Badmus said, “Operatives from Mushin Olosan rescued one Charles Ibeleme while being mobbed by a tumultuous crowd. This was over allegations of attempted kidnap. The Comissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation”
